Buying Cannabis Online in Ontario: A 19+ Guide to Shopping Safely

If you are ordering cannabis online for the first time, the questions are usually the same. Am I allowed to do this? How much can I buy? And how do I tell a decent shop from a bad one?

Short answers, then the detail.

The rules, briefly

• You must be 19 or older to buy or possess cannabis in Ontario. Photo ID is checked at delivery.
• Public possession is capped at 30 grams of dried cannabis, or the equivalent in other formats.
• Never drive after consuming. Impaired driving law covers cannabis exactly as it covers alcohol, and penalties are serious.
• Cannabis stays in Canada. Taking it across an international border is a federal offence regardless of legality on either side.
• Landlords and condo boards can restrict smoking on their property. Worth checking your lease.

What a trustworthy online shop looks like

Clear product information. Strain, grade, cannabinoid content and format should be on the listing. Menus that describe everything as simply “fire” are telling you nothing useful.

Real, current stock. Prices and availability should reflect what is actually in the building. A menu that never changes is a warning sign.

Transparent delivery terms. Minimum order, delivery fee, free-shipping threshold and realistic time windows should be stated up front rather than discovered at checkout.

Visible age verification. A shop that does not take 19+ seriously is not taking anything else seriously either.

A findable human. Phone number, email, working hours. If something goes wrong with an order, you need someone to talk to.

Honest claims. Be sceptical of any cannabis seller promising medical outcomes or guaranteed results. Regulated sellers do not make those claims, and neither should anyone else.

Before your first order

1. Confirm you are inside the delivery zone. Check the delivery areas page rather than assuming.
2. Check the minimum order and fee. Free delivery thresholds change what you should put in the cart.
3. Read the payment options. Cash on delivery, e-transfer and card are all common. Know which applies before the driver arrives.
