Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid: How to Actually Choose

Every menu splits flower into indica, sativa and hybrid, and most people pick based on a half-remembered rule about one making you sleepy. It’s a useful starting point but it’s not the whole story. Here’s the practical version — what the categories mean, what the grading letters mean, and how to pick something you’ll actually enjoy.

Indica

Indica strains are the ones associated with body relaxation and a heavier, more sedating feel. They’re what most people reach for at the end of the day, for winding down, for sleep, or for physical discomfort. Classic examples on our indica menu tend to be dense, dark-green, purple-flecked buds with earthy or sweet noses.

Choose indica if: you’re smoking in the evening, you want to slow down, or you’re using cannabis to help with sleep.

Sativa

Sativa is the daytime category — more head than body, often described as energizing, talkative or creative. The buds are usually lighter and airier, with citrus, pine or fuel-forward terpene profiles.

Choose sativa if: you’re smoking before something social, working on something creative, or you find indica leaves you too flattened.

One honest caveat: sativa is the category most likely to tip into anxiety at high doses. If you’re prone to that, start small.

Hybrid

Nearly everything grown today is a hybrid to some degree. The label signals a blend — indica-leaning, sativa-leaning, or balanced. Hybrids are the most versatile option and where most of the interesting modern genetics live.

Choose hybrid if: you want one strain that works morning and night, or you’re still figuring out what you like.

What the Letters Mean: AAA, AAAA, AAAA+

The grading system is about quality of the cure and the bud, not potency alone:

  • AAA — solid everyday flower. Good effect, less visual bag appeal. Where the value ounces under $100 live.
  • AAAA — well-cured, dense, trichome-heavy, strong terpene nose.
  • AAAA+ — top shelf. Hand-trimmed, frosted, loud from the moment the bag opens.

Terpenes Matter More Than the Category

If two indicas feel completely different, terpenes are usually why. Myrcene leans sedating, limonene bright, caryophyllene peppery and calming, pinene sharp and clear. Over time you’ll notice you’re chasing a smell as much as a category — that’s your terpene preference forming.

Dose Beats Category

Here’s the thing most strain guides skip: how much you take usually matters more than which category you picked. A small amount of a heavy indica can feel pleasant and clear-headed. Too much of anything — indica included — can leave you anxious or uncomfortable. If you’re returning after a long break, or trying an unfamiliar strain, take less than you think you need and wait. Tolerance builds fast and resets faster than people expect.

Try Before You Commit

This is the argument for starting small. Instead of committing a full ounce to a strain you’ve never tried, buy a smaller quantity or grab a pre-roll first. The Price Drops section is a cheap way to sample something new.
